04/07/2007 - Merseyside, England (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Everton moved into the top five of the Premiership standings on Friday with a comfortable 4-1 win over Fulham at Goodison Park.
Carlos Bocanegra put the visitors ahead after 22 minutes, but it was all Toffees after that. Lee Carsley erased Bocanegra's opener three minutes later, and Alan Stubbs and James Vaughan each tallied in the final 11 minutes of the half to put Everton ahead by two goals. After the restart it was more of the same, with Everton on the attack in search of more goals. Second-half substitute Victor Anichebe then capped the scoring 10 minutes from time.
Former midfielder Simon Davies provided the opening goal for the London club as he curled a corner kick into the box and found the head of Bocanegra, who headed home from the top of the six-yard box.
Things quickly went downhill for the visiting however, and they were once again on level terms three minutes later. Phil Neville played Joleon Lescott down the left wing, before Lescott's driven cross arrived on the foot of Carsley, who one-timed the ball past keeper Antti Niemi.
Mikel Arteta's free-kick set up the second goal in the 34th minute. The Spaniard sent a dipping cross into the area for Stubbs, flashed in from outside the box to head past the diving Niemi for a 2-1 lead.
Vaughan then created havoc among the Fulham defenders, getting in behind the back line and smacking a cross from Lescott off the post before connecting with an Arteta cross to slot the ball home.
With a two-goal lead in hand, the home side continued to attack the Fulham net. Niemi made a number of fine stops before letting in Anichebe's effort 10 minutes before the final whistle. The striker was on the field for only two minutes, but he made the most of his chance, taking a low cross from Arteta and placing it inside the left post with a well-hit shot from just inside the box.
In Friday's other contest, Charlton narrowly climbed out of the relegation zone with a 0-0 draw against Manchester City.
On Saturday, the title race continues with league-leaders Manchester United traveling to Fratton Park to meet Portsmouth, while second-placed Chelsea, six points back, hosts Tottenham. West Ham needs to start picking up points to avoid relegation but draws a tough opponent in Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Struggling Aston Villa makes a visit to Blackburn, bottom-feeders Watford must pile up wins if they are to avoid being sent down, and the Hornets need to start against Middlesbrough. Liverpool visits Reading after a 4-1 thumping of Arsenal last week, Sheffield United continues to fight for a spot in the Premiership next season and hosts Newcastle and fifth-placed Bolton visits Wigan, who is just two points clear of relegation.
