Gagne leads Flyers over Bruins in Boston

Hockey Betting Lines

03/03/2009 - Boston, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Simon Gagne scored twice and set up another tally, as the Philadelphia Flyers used a three-goal third period to upend the Boston Bruins, 4-2, at TD Banknorth Garden.

Mike Knuble registered a goal and two assists in his 800th career game, while Scottie Upshall also found the net for the Flyers, who snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the sixth time in their last nine games. Antero Niittymaki was solid between the pipes for Philadelphia, making 22 saves to improve his record to 15-5-5 on the season.

Patrice Bergeron and Stephane Yelle both notched a power-play goal for the East-leading Bruins, who have been struggling recently, losing eight of their last 11 games. Manny Fernandez allowed four goals on 26 shots in defeat.

Boston drew first blood with the man advantage. Bergeron positioned himself in the left circle and he one-timed Zdeno Chara's pass between the right pad of Niittymaki and the far post with 5:35 to play in the opening frame.

Upshall evened things up at the 1:49 mark of the second period, stealing the puck just inside the Boston blueline and beating Fernandez with a wrister.

The Flyers took a 2-1 lead at 2:22 of the third period when Andrew Alberts' wrister from the left point was redirected down low by Gagne.

Knuble then provided some much-needed insurance, driving to the slot and hammering a nifty no-look pass by Gagne past Fernandez at 5:43.

Gagne cemented the win on the power play with 3:34 left in the game.

Yelle scored in the final minute for Boston, but it was too little, too late.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.

MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds

Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.

New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.

Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
